Sudscript is an investigation of letterforms using window washing as a medium for typographic exploration. By squeegeeing strokes into soap suds, I turn an ordinary chore into a process of typographic invention that exists beyond the confines of traditional screen and print media. With an existing interest in ink calligraphy, I applied the same techniques at a larger scale after noticing that a window squeegee resembles the broad nib of a pen. While ink creates a positive impression on a page, the challenge of producing type on a window could not be done the same way. As a result, I needed to create a layer on the window in which I could “carve” out the letters in negative space. A photograph of each letter was taken in the center of the window which was approximate to 1 meter (or 2800 typographic points). A compiled piece of each letter was included in Northern Contemporary Gallery’s Swash and Serif 9 in September 2025 in Toronto. This piece allowed me to approach typography and type design in an analog form which was later translated into an .OTF font file using Glyphs 3.
